What is a Sanding Machine Use for

Home improvement techniques are becoming extremely common in this modern age, hence the need for smoother surfaces, floors and a whole aligned general outlook. A sanding machine is, therefore, a must have as it is used for the finishing of wood, composite and plastic by abrasion of surfaces. There are many types of sanding machines in the market and include; belt, edge, disc, orbital, oscillatory, drum, orbital and conveyor sanding machines.

What is a Sanding Machine use for?

Sanding machines are used for flattening of rough surfaces, rough boards, shaping, and rounding. This is achieved by the removal of wood by angling the sander at a specific angle for leveling. This is commonly achieved by the use of a hand held belt sanders as they have high power and coarse grits. Sanders is also used to finish curved surfaces and a flap sander is used as such. Sanding machines are used in curving contours and curves on surfaces with the use of an oscillating spindle. In addition, sanders are used for stripping paint on doors and surfaces. Large surfaces are also finished by Sanders and most specifically a drum sander. Sanders is essential in the manufacturing of furniture and cabinets for smooth finishing. Sanders also create and finish decorative edges.

The commonly used type of sanding machine is the belt sanders. Belt sanders consist of edge sanders and contact wheel. Edge sanders are immobile, long, featuring a flat platen behind the horizontal sanding surface. Contact wheel consists of a contact wheel and a pulley. Abrasive belts are placed on both sides of the contact wheel and pulley. Workpieces are further grounded against the abrasive belt. Drum sanders mostly accept abrasive sleeves as they have an expansive drum. Orbital Sanders as the name suggests they use orbital motions during operations. Sanders is mostly used for grinding and aligning flat or square surfaces.

Applications of sanding machines include manual and automatic Sanders. Manual as the name suggests requires manual setup, as opposed to automatic that load the pieces automatically and operate with minimal user standby. Sanding machines are used for cabinets, conveyors, surfaces and dressing tables. Safety precautions must be observed during the use of a sanding machine and include: Use of a brush to clean any remnants on the sanding machine, Wearing protective safety glasses at all times, Avoid using the machine on wet surfaces, For disk Sanders always ensure the side facing downwards is in contact with the material, Always ensure you use fixtures to hold the workpiece in place.

Just like any other machine a sanding machine poses health risks for the user. A common health effect is skin burns ranging from mild to severe if it is incorrectly used. When looking for a sanding machine several specifications must be observed such as Current ranging from 5 to 11amps, Power not less than 0.24Hp, Speed not less than 900rpm, Power either single phase or three phase power.

The operation of a sanding machine is as follows: Ensure before plugging in a sander that the switch is off, Ensure that your surface is completely dry before plugging in the switch, Ensure that the Sander is placed quite some distance from the operator and well supported, Ensure that the users fingers are away from the disk of the sanders, Ensure that the sander is moving in the correct direction as illustrated by the manufacturer, Clean the machine from time to time when in use, Ensure that the machine is not left running when work is completed.
